5 Questions to Ask Yourself When Looking for Personal Training in St. Louis

5 Questions to Ask Yourself When Looking for Personal Training in St. Louis

It’s been pretty evident lately that St. Louis is starting to catch the fitness craze – and hopefully you are too! There are many options for fitness and personal training programs in St. Louis, but how do you know what the best fit is for you?

There are several key points to consider when choosing a personal trainer in St. Louis, but a good starting point would be to ask yourself the following five questions:

1) Is the personal trainer knowledgeable?

  • Completion of training courses and training certifications like NASM is a good base for choosing your trainer. Assuming they are certified, do they have the skills and experience to take you through the program while maneuvering through life’s obstacles? Making a program work for YOU is essential to a successful trainer/trainee relationship.

2) Do they get results?

  • Do they have a track record of getting the type of results you want to see in yourself? If so, did their clients follow a reasonable plan that you would be able to execute without problems?

3) Can they inspire you?

  • Could they make you want to become a better version of yourself every single day? Could they make you want to ditch your bad habits (junk food, over-indulging on the weekends, too much television, taking the elevator, etc.) in exchange for healthier habits (leafy greens and lean meat, weekend moderation, choosing a run over the tv, choosing the stairs over the elevator, etc.)? Personal Trainers can’t force you to be healthier, but they should be able to inspire you to do your absolute best.

4) Can you see yourself enjoying their workouts?

  • You should love your trainer, look forward to every workout and try to get better each and every session.

5) Does their nutrition plan work for you?

  • Providing a diet is easy. Providing a plan that helps you reach your short-term goals is important, but building skills and habits, building the foundation is the key to making a permanent change. Does the personal trainer have a system in place to show you how to do that and guide you to success?

If you’ve answered yes to the five questions above, then you’ve most likely made a great choice! Next, we’ll take a quick look at the different options for personal training programs in St. Louis.

Private Training: 1-on-1

Although they tend to be slightly more expensive, 1-on-1 personal training sessions are a great way to improve your fitness and overall health. To help offset the cost you may want to do 30-minute sessions. For most people, these types of sessions are a fine opportunity to focus on perfecting your form and extra accountability. Most 1-on-1 personal trainers deliver good sessions, but may not have a complete program to teach you about ever-important nutrition skills that will help you be better overall – so be sure to ask the right questions to make sure it’s the right fit!

Semi-Private Personal Training: 2 to 5 People

Semi-private training is pretty similar to personal training. You will still receive the customized program, but there will be others in the session with you. These sessions are a great way to get that extra attention you desire, without losing that intense energy you get when you’re a part of a group class. At Faster Fitness, we actually prefer the semi-private method because it allows us to provide a better value and more flexibility in scheduling.

Group Personal Training: 6 to 20 People

Group personal training is a relatively new program that gives you all the benefits of a personal trainer, but with the energy of a large group. This option provides a very flexible schedule, great value, and it can be a ton of fun! Before choosing group sessions over the other options listed above, look into what type of training can be expected. If the class looks like a glorified boot camp, then odds are it’s not going to get you lean and athletic. Make sure they offer dumbbells, barbells, and other tools that are essential in getting you the results you want.

Fitness Classes: 20+ People

Sometimes personal trainers in St. Louis will conduct sessions like boot camps, boxing classes, etc. which are usually larger sessions great for burning calories and establishing a fitness base. But beware – proper form has been known to slip in these larger sessions (it’s simple – the more people there are in a class the less attention the trainer can pay to each trainee), so make sure you’re training safe!
